Monday - April 29th, 2002 way toooo early. 62 grams this morning at 4 am feeding. Feeding 10% body wt about 60.5 cc's/mls Crop is not empting as it should after 5 hours. Still a little left in crop.
Monday - April 29, 2002 HOME! Dr. Womack saw her as soon as we got in the door. . Doc's scale weighed her at 65 grams. I thoughtfully held back a feeding until he saw her just in case he wanted to put her under. Glad I did. For something so tiny she is very strong and squirmy . Took two people to hold her still for the x-ray. He took a picture and we could all see the mal alignment problem.
Some how the flexor tendons and slipped to one side and the joint, knee or stifle had hyper extended and the two bones that were supposed to be on top of each other were basically now side by side.
NORMAL LEG left
EMILY'S LEG right
Dr. Womack said she may or may not have full use of the leg but all I wanted to hear is that there is still hope and he will keep on trying. The problem now is letting her grow more bone mass so he has something to work with if surgery is needed down the road. The best comparison I can give at this is trying to set a broken leg on a butterfly.
Have to check the leg for abnormal swelling, and keep her medicated for pain. When a few days pass I will begin therapy on the foot. I will try and get her to grasp match sticks to try and keep the feeling going in the foot .
Plan for now is to leave this on for 4 days. Will be contacted by Dr. Thursday to check on her.
Came home to 2 nice emails from Dr. Erik Stauber and Dr. Nickol Finch at WSU offering their assistance. Seems to have been a switchboard operator error in relaying messages.
Emily with her bruised bum! Dr. has her leg pointing in the right direction. Now lets hope she doesn't swell to bad tonight and I have to cut her out if the vet wrap.
She is taking diluted baby aspirin in her formula for the pain. Seems to be resting well on her water bed
Tuesday April 30th - 73 grams (nice gain) She slept well through out the night . Last feeding was at 1:30 A.M. 6 am rolls around and she is very fussy and throwing her self. The aspirin had obviously worn off. I feed her with a tad of aspirin with her formula. EMERGENCY 1 1/2 hours later she began to barf it all back up. She began sputtering and wheezing. When she relaxed I heard clicking in her chest. Must have sucked some formula down the wrong pipe. Last thing she needs is to battle a secondary infection on top of her bad leg. Had no antibiotics here so off to the vet we go again. (Amazing how that 79 mile trip there takes seemingly 3 hours, and the 79 miles home a mere 45 minutes.)
Thinking back, I had first given her some aspirin Monday for the pain on a semi-full crop. Since she was soo fussy at her am feeding I added a bit of aspirin again. Her crop was empty and it really must have irritated the stomach. So up it came. I gave her some warm ringers and that came up also.
Emily is now on Amoxicillin 2 times per day for 10 days in case she inhaled some formula. Her leg is still pointed in the right direction even after all her thrashing. Huge black and blue bruise on her bum looks like she was in a bar fight.;) Plan is to discuss administering Nystatin and Pro-Bios when vet calls Thrus,
Wednesday May 1, 2002 76 grams Had a good night. Pain may be subsiding. Bruise is still blackish . Breathing is fair. Not as many chest noises today. Joint less swollen. Tomorrow we take off her vet wrap. < deep breath>
